Jimco Software Reviews - DVD Workshop 2.2 (continued)

Menus in DVD Workshop are created in a 4:3 aspect ratio. If you want widescreen menus, you will need to use DVD Workshop to create your DVD folders and then edit the IFO file using a tool such as IFOEdit. Making this change is easily done and you should be able to find plenty of information on the Web for doing so.

Finish Step

Once you've finished creating your menu, you are ready to move on to the Finish step. This is where you will either burn your DVD, create an ISO image, create DVD folders for burning later, or burn your DVD to Digital Linear Tape (DLT). DLT is an industry standard for creating masters that can then be replicated later en masse. The ability to burn to DLT is not a common feature in DVD authoring software and it's nice to see the option in DVD Workshop.

DVD Workshop also provides the ability to add copy protection via Macrovision. When using this feature, you will need to burn to DLT and have a mass production house burn the final product. Adding Macrovision copy protection requires a license agreement with Macrovision, something that mass production houses should have.

In my testing, DVD Workshop reliably burns DVDs on any media I threw at it. Successful burning of DVDs is not only a function of the DVD burner; it's also a function of the driver used to burn the DVD. Ulead excels in this area and I was able to successfully burn to DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW without issues.

DVD Workshop will allow you to choose how you want your video handled when it's played on a television of a different aspect ratio than the video itself. You can choose between letterbox, pan and scan, or give the player the ablity of deciding on its own.

Conclusion

DVD Workshop has a lot to like. The interface felt a little strange to me at first, but after creating a few DVDs with it, I began to appreciate its simplicity and power. It has now become my DVD authoring application of choice. I am confident that you will find it meets your needs nicely as well.

Very Highly Recommended
