Jimco Software Reviews - UEStudio '05 (continued)

UEStudio also includes a rudimentary macro feature. The macro recorder will record keystrokes easily, but it doesn't use any standardized language. However, it does serve its purpose well and you can configure a macro to run automatically when files are opened in UEStudio.

Ratings

Usability : 4/5
UEStudio's interface is quite usable, but a lack of intuitiveness in some areas detracts a point.

Interface : 4/5
The interface is attractive with many custom icons adding to its feel of quality. I'd like to have seen some of the tools offer context sensitivity. When I'm editing an HTML file, I don't need to see a toolbar suitable for editing C++ source code.

Intuitiveness : 4/5
When you first start using UEStudio, the vast array of menu options might seem overwhelming. Fortunately, it's an intuitive application in most cases. However, some menu options were still in awkward locations and hard to locate. For example, the dialog to configure options is located under Advanced / Configuration.

Features : 5/5
There's little doubt but that UEStudio exceeds other similar tools in features. In addition to all the tools you need for code editing and text editing, UEStudio includes many other tools to round out the package.

Documentation : 3/5
For all of the functionality in this product, the documentation is sorely lacking. Printed documentation isn't necessary, but we'd like to have had more details on the features in UEStudio.

Price vs. Value Ratio : 3/5
Depending on your needs and how you work, this category could end up being higher or lower than we scored it. We feel that most people will use UEStudio as a text file editor, whether for code in projects or standalone HTML, CSS, XML, etc. At $100, UEStudio's price is a little steep for that kind of functionality. However, if you plan on using the compiler/assembler support extensively, it may represent a greater value to you.

Reviewer's Tilt : 1/5
We have used UltraEdit for a while and feel that our past experience warranted a tilt of 1 out of 5.

Overall : 4/5
UEStudio '05 is an excellent product. It's stable, packs a ton of features, and is easy to use. We feel confident in giving it our recommendation.
