Introduction
Driving traffic to your Web site is a fine art. It never ceases to amaze me that small and seemingly innocuous changes to a site can dramatically change the volume of traffic. Most hosting companies offer the ability to analyze traffic to a Web site using the Web server logs. Using this method, you can get a precise picture of your traffic. The drawback is that someone else is maintaining the historical data. If you change hosts (or if your host changes their log analyzation software), you lose all of your history.
These days, it makes sense to analyze your own server logs and to maintain a history on your own. It's not hard to do. Almost all hosting companies provide access to the raw log files (often at a lower price than offering analyzation of those logs), so all you need is some software that will parse through those log files and show you the data therein in a user-friendly format.
There are quite a few tools available to parse log files. In this review, I'll look at one of them; SurfStats Log Analyzer Professional 8.0.
