Some of you may remember a company called Sonic Foundry.  Sonic Foundry created Sound Forge, CD Architect, ACID, and many other software products focused on audio editing and presentation on the computer.  They gained a cult-like following because of the quality of their products.  One of those products was called Vegas 1.0 and it was released in 1999 as an audio editor with video support.  Eventually Sonic Foundry realized that Vegas represented an opposite juxtaposition and it became known as Vegas Video.

Fast forward to 2003.  Vegas 4.0 (Sonic Foundry eventually dropped the word video from the name) was knocking the socks off of video aficionados world-wide.  Everything was great.  Then in May, Sony announced that it had acquired Sonic Foundry for 18 million dollars. The Vegas community panicked.  Rumors ran rampant concerning the demise of their beloved Vegas.  They were soon to realize that everything was fine and Sony had no plans to gut this powerhouse application.

Fast forward again to 2005.  Sony releases Vegas 6 and it becomes clear that not only is Sony not going to dump Vegas, but they're putting plenty of resources into it!  Vegas 6 adds support for HDV (for those who can afford a camera that also supports it) and adds many other features Vegas users have been wanting for a long time.

There are several video samples in this review.  Each video was edited and rendered with Vegas 6.  The video was then re-encoded for Internet presentation with SWiSHvideo, the subject of our next review.

Let's have a look at Vegas 6 and see what it can do for you.  By the time we finish this review, you'll be selling your prized possessions in order to get the money to buy Vegas.  It really is that good.

Keep in mind that Vegas is a non-destructive editor.  While some of the audio effects that you can apply do actually alter the audio files themselves, none of the changes you make to your video or images in Vegas affect the files themselves.  Most of the audio filters are also non-destructive.
