Jimco Software Reviews - Bryce 5.5 (continued)

Overall

Bryce 5.5 is a great upgrade for existing Bryce users. It has faster render times, a ton of excellent new features (including Bryce Lightning for network rendering), and yet it still retains the traits that has made it a favorite among 3D graphic artists for many years.

Usability : 5/5
Bryce's dialogs are incredibly attractive and usable at the same time. Memory dots abound and one can truly tell that this is an interface built around the user.

Interface : 5/5
Bryce's unique interface is wonderful. However, it's one of those love/hate concepts. I happen to love it.

Intuitiveness : 4/5
Some of the features are not easily discoverable, but this has more to do with the complexity of the application rather than a design flaw.

Features : 4/5
I'd like to see more effort put into modeling. The introduction of metaballs seems to be a sign that DAZ may be thinking along those lines. Let's hope so.

Documentation : 5/5
I really don't like PDF documentation (which is what Bryce provides), but this documentation is high-quality and accurate. Hard to argue with that.

Price vs. Value Ratio : 5/5
Bryce is priced extraordinarily low for what it offers. In fact, you may find yourself thinking that you're seeing an upgrade price as opposed to a full product!

Reviewer's Tilt : 3/5
Based upon past experiences with this product.

Overall : 4/5
Bryce earns a 4 overall, only because of a lack of modeling tools. Realistically, Bryce never seemed to be a full-fledged modeling tool to me, but the addition of metaballs started DAZ down the road of offering a more robust modeling feature-set.

If you have even a passing interest in 3D landscapes, you must add Bryce to your toolset. At this price, there's simply no excuse not to.
