How It Works

AnyDVD runs in the system tray in Windows and watches for DVDs or CDs to be inserted. If a DVD is inserted, AnyDVD scans it and does several things:

  • Removes region code restrictions
  • Removes any copy protection
  • Controls the speed of your drive to reduce noise
  • Skips unwanted DVD content
  • . . . and more . . .

AnyDVD will also allow you to rip DVD VOB files to your hard drive so that you can make a backup of your DVD. That backup can be played by most software DVD players (so that you don't have to carry along the disc when you travel.) You should be aware that copying protected DVDs in this manner is against the laws of the United States. I suspect that may be why SlySoft is located in the West Indies and Europe.

How Well It Works

AnyDVD is among the most reliable software I've ever used. It sits quietly in the system tray until a disc is inserted at which time it works its magic without you even realizing it. In my case, I stick a DVD in the drive and the main movie starts playing immediately instead of forcing me to watch previews and splash screens. AnyDVD will warn you when you enable this feature that it doesn't work on all DVDs, but it works on almost every DVD I've played.

As I previously mentioned, AnyDVD will also make any DVD appear to be unprotected from copying applications. That means that you can use any application (for example, Nero Recode) to rip the DVD into a smaller format for playing while on trips on your laptop. Convenient, but entirely illegal. Nice, huh.

Conclusion

If you play DVDs on your laptop, I highly recommend that you spend a few bucks and grab a copy of AnyDVD. It works great, and SlySoft keeps it updated often so that it will always provide trouble-free functionality. Purchasers receive free updates, so you're always covered.
