Spawn for Expression Web is an add-in to Expression Web
that allows you to easily create JavaScript popup windows in
your site without having to write any code. Simply launch
Spawn, set your options, and Spawn does all of the work for
you.
The image at the left is the General Properties tab in Spawn.
From here, you can set the URL that should be displayed in
your popup, the name of the window (helpful when you want to
target your popup with other links on your page), the CSS
class for your link, a tooltip for your link, and how Spawn's
script gets inserted on your page.
If you don't understand one of the options in Spawn, it's not
a problem. Spawn comes with comprehensive documentation, and
there are links in the interface to specific help topics that
are particularly helpful for certain settings.
You can click the image to the left for a larger view.
(Incidentally, the popup window you'll see was created using
Spawn.)
The
Behavior / Appearance tab contains all of the settings for
controlling how your popup link is activated and how your
window appears. Spawn for Expression Web includes many
event triggers that you can use to create your popup. The
event triggers that are available will change based upon what
is selected when Spawn is launched.
You can also choose between many different window features
such as scrollbars, toolbars, menu bars, etc. See Spawn's
documentation for these settings. Some browsers don't let you
manipulate certain window features for security reasons.

The
Window Position tab makes it easy to control the position of
your popup within the parent browser window. You can also
choose to have your popup centered horizontally, vertically,
or both.
If you'd prefer, you can select from common screen resolutions
and see a small preview of your popup window. You can then
drag the preview into the position where you want your popup
to appear.
Click the image to the left for a larger view.
Spawn comes with comprehensive documentation on every feature
as well as many tips for creating popups in specific browsers.
Most of Spawn's options are also linked to the Help. Don't
know what event triggers are? You can simply click on the
Event Triggers dropdown and then press F1 to go right to the
Help topic on event triggers.
We've also included several links within the Spawn interface
that link directly to appropriate Help topics.
